"The Penguin Parade is located on Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia, only 140 kilometres south-east of Melbourne. It is part of Phillip Island Nature Park. The area is a reserve designed to protect and promote awareness of Little Penguins (previously called Fairy Penguins)."
"Each night at sunset, the world’s smallest penguins, the Little Penguins, emerge from the sea and waddle ashore to their sand dune burrows. This is a truly memorable natural wildlife experience."

We sat in the freezing cold, with wind whipping in from the ocean, and waited as the sun set. After dark, a few little heads popped up as the first penguins checked that the coast was clear of predators. Then a group of penguins made their way onto the beach and waddled up together, heading for the safety of burrows! Photography was not allowed, so I found pictures on the Internet. Thank goodness for HOT CHOCOLATE after the fact. We all dressed in layers of clothing, with scarves, beanies, double socks and pants and jerseys, jackets and a blanket. Pity we forgot the gloves!!!

Great photos, do you think these ones you found on the Internet captured the feeling of actually being there? We hope the rest of your journey is as satisfying as the trip to Australia has been. I'll be watching your site for more photos of the rest of the journey!

Hiya MoMa! Yes, these pictures are excellent of the penguins, but nothing could capture the cuteness of them gingerly waddling up the beach to the safety of their burrows! It's a sight to behold. It was FREEEEZING there, and it rained a few drops... thank GOODNESS it didn't ACTUALLY rain properly!

Hiya Tren.... they come ashore when it gets dark and they head for their burrows for the night. It's just so sweet to watch them. They are really small. :)

I didn't realise there were penguins in Oz. Never heard of fairy penguins either. You're educating me!

Wow, I'll bet that was really exciting to see all of them waddling up to their burrows for the night!! Sorry it was so cold for you all.

Really loved all the commentary you've added for our education. Thanks for taking the time to do that.

Have a safe flight on your way to SA. Hugs go with you for your parents & Gid! Love ya sweetie!!

Hope you get this next time you check in. As its Thursday, you will be travelling to SA. Another day, another continent! Those penguins look an absolute treat! Hard to believe it can be so cold in Australia. So good to hear that you had such a wonderful time in Oz. Geena seems an absolute sweetie - you'll really miss her.

Look forward to hearing you have arrived safely in Joburg. Not long till you get over to the UK ...

Hidy Y'all... it's been a while since I visited my own blog! LOL!

These are the only penguins which DO only come out at night, incidentally. Of course, even though it is clearly stated before one goes to the observation deck, that there is to be NO flash photography, there will always be some idiot who doesn't give a damn and tries a few! When we walked back up to the exhibition building, with penguins all around us in the dark, talking to one another and entering their burrows, one of the spectators took a picture right in view of one of the volunteers!! I wanted to smack that person over the head!

So, Karuna, in answer to your question, in the past these animals were photographed plenty, and even today, there will be some dumb a$$ who doesn't give a fig about whether the animals are scared or not!!! It drives me crazy.

MoMa, as you now know, with the amount of photos I DID manage to take, it is easier to share on Kodak gallery, so that's where they will be! :)
